Aims & Scope

The “ΠΡΑΞΗMΑ.

Journal of Visual Semiotics” ("PRAXEMA") is a periodical issue, intended for the discussion of theoretical problems of modern visual semiotics, the sphere of which includes the questions of studying the visual aspects of organization and functioning of culture as a communicative environment.

Visual semiotics is understood as a one of the new dynamic human sciences, and as an multidisciplinary field, in which methods and achievements of the “traditional”, “classic” branch of the humanities interact: philosophy, cultural studies, sociology, political science, art history, religious studies, aesthetics, ethics, history, linguistics, ethnography etc.

The dominant view of the research on the theme is determined by the accentuation of communicative aspects of visual semiotics.

It will give an opportunity to put into focus the relationship of visual phenomena and systems of visual phenomena with the cultural and anthropological practice.

In this (pragmatic) perspective, any visual sema can and should be interpreted as praxema: sign presenting and generating certain pragmatic installations, norms and effects.

Thus, the subject of visual semiotics is understood as a sphere of cultural and anthropological praxis, as a space of mutual understanding and interaction through optical expressed existentially important meanings.
