Aims & Scope
International academic journal Platonic Investigations / Πλατωνικὰ ζητήματα is published under the auspices of the Interregional public organization “Plato Philosophical Society” with the participation of the Russian Christian Academy for the Humanities (Saint Petersburg) and the Russian State University for the Humanities (Moscow).
It has been published as a peer-reviewed scholarly periodical since 2014.
The journal is published biannually; all the submitted articles are subject to peer-review and selection by experts.
The journal aims at publishing the results of scholarly research on the philosophy of Plato and the Platonic tradition, the historico-philosophical, culturological and mythopoetic contexts of their emergence, as well as the numerous influences they have exerted and continue to exert on individual thinkers and whole societies in both the West and the East.
Keeping in mind the danger of an overly literal understanding of Alfred Whitehead’s well-known aphorism: “The safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato,” — the editors still consider as a self-evident fact the invariable presence of Platonism, sometimes in rather fanciful and barely recognizable forms, in the intellectual landscape of at the very least European history of thought, including relevant chapters of Byzantine and Russian intellectual history.
The all-embracing influence of Platonic philosophy entailed the great diversity of coexisting approaches to its study: some have emerged only recently, others are rooted in the work of antique philologists and commentators.
