Aims & Scope

California Italian Studies (CIS) is a digital, peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes innovative and influential research in the field of Italian Studies. As the expression of the California Interdisciplinary Consortium for Italian Studies (CICIS), CIS is supported by leading institutions of higher education in California.

The journal seeks contributions that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Interdisciplinarity: work that combines multiple disciplines, uses tools from one discipline in the service of another, or relates to a cluster of scholarly works representing multiple disciplines.
  • Comparativity: placing the study of Italian history, culture, society, and languages in relation to other geographical, cultural, and linguistic formations.
  • Criticality: work that not only studies an object but also engages in theoretical and/or methodological reflection on its own approach and implications.

Submissions should be of interest to a broad spectrum of scholars in and outside of Italian Studies, and contributions that make creative use of the journal's digital format will be especially encouraged.
