Aims & Scope

Ardeth is a magazine that focuses on the operational work of architects, rather than their results or authors. By shifting the focus from subjects (their good intentions, as taught in universities and recovered in the profession) to objects (design products, at work in the social system that contains them), Ardeth aims to develop an analytical and falsifiable understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in an open practice like design. Through a process of disciplinary redefinition, Ardeth explores the falsifiability of design hypotheses as objects that allow the project to scientifically confront errors and approximations.

Ardeth relies on the exhaustion of the project's legitimization model, which is exclusively based on seduction with the subject-author. By analyzing the difficulties encountered by architecture in the diffusion of its value, Ardeth aims to define the design field's operational dimension, which is both technical, symbolic, and political. The project is not the result of an assumed artistic will of a subject informed by a global interpretation of the world, but the documentary result of a complex negotiation between agents of various natures (subjects, rules, writings, collective representations). From this assumption, the magazine aims to explore the different phenomenologies of the project's performativity that are capable of offering convincing responses - in terms of narration as well - to the socially founded demand for the transformation of physical space.

Ardeth was born in Italy: the place where, in the second half of the 20th century, the dominant interpretive paradigm of the designer's role was born, as well as the place where this paradigm encounters the most difficulties in renewing its own social function. Ardeth opens up to the world, aware that the problems of architectural practice concern global urban challenges, and that the scope of the effects generated by the project has radically changed with the turn of the millennium.

Ardeth addresses two types of readers. First, those motivated by operational objectives, who will be interested in analyses of design production performance, estimates of its implications in bureaucratic and symbolic dimensions, and the project's ability to produce effects. Then, those interested in the purely social dimension of the project, the encadrement of specific forms by which it operates within the community, and finally, the relationship between the narrative and the forms of a socially constructed and analytically verifiable logic, not centered on the exclusive intentionality of the architect.
