UNESP began in 1979 with the merger of the journals Revista da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba, Revista da Faculdade de Farmácia e Odontologia de Araraquara and Revista da Faculdade de Odontologia de São José dos Campos.

It is published by the Universidade Estadual Paulista "Julio de Mesquita Filho" - UNESP.

Since its inception, the journal has been adapting to the guidelines for a contemporary editorial policy.

Since it was indexed in the SciELO database, the journal is open access, fully online and articles are published in Portuguese or English.

Since 2019, the journal has adopted continuous publication, allowing articles to be published more quickly.
