我刊创办于1998年5月，目前是我国惟一的胃肠外科专业学术期刊。本刊的主要读者对象为普通外科和胃肠 外科及相关专业临床、科研、教学的高、中级医师。办刊宗旨是：在贯彻执行理论与实践相结合、普及与提高相结合的方针，全面系统地反映国内外胃肠外科领域的学术动态，促进我国胃肠外科的学科发展和学术交流。本刊设有专题述评、专题论坛、述评、专家笔谈、专题论著、论著、临床报道、病例报告、临床思维与训练、诊治指南、文献综述、医学信息等栏目；重点刊登胃肠外科及相关学科的主要研究成果和最新进展方面的文章；具有较高的学术权威性和一定的学术导向性。
