Aims & Scope

The Journal of Trial and Error (JOTE) is a diamond open access, multidisciplinary journal.

The Journal of Trial and Error aims to publish research that has produced negative or null results (Empirical Articles) where insightful methodological mistakes have been made (Empirical Articles that contextualizes and reflects on specific ???failed??? research (Reflections) that discusses and reflects on open science or other research practices (Meta-Research) in order to challenge traditional notions of what is needed for succes in academia counter positive publication bias (the ???file-drawer problem???) Speed the scientific process by allowing scientists to learn from each other???s ???failures??? provide a more accurate view of reality facilitate more rigorous meta-analyses ensure more robust machine learning models At JOTE, we believe that well-conducted research is valuable regardless of outcome.

We publish studies that offer genuine learning opportunities, contribute to the transparency of science, and help complete the scientific record, rather than just the success stories.

Note that this doesn???t mean that we publish sloppy science ! Rather, we champion robust, honest science.

Every piece we publish is reviewed for quality, rigor, and clarity, not just outcome, because understanding error is part of doing science right.
